Guidelines for Submitting Your Manuscript

Due to the overwhelming number of unsolicited manuscripts we receive, we regret that we cannot respond personally to each submission, but rest assured that we do make every effort to consider each and every one we receive. Our response time varies, but generally you should expect to wait from three to five months.

Before submitting your proposal, we ask that you consider whether your material fits our publishing profile. Bright Sky Press publishes approximately 20 books a year. We specialize in high-quality, reasonably priced books for adults and children. To gain a better understanding of our publishing program, please examine our books in a bookstore, library, or visit our website: www.brightskypress.com.

Adult Trade Submissions
Our adult titles include: nonfiction Texana marketable at a national level; cookbooks; photography, business and historical titles; gardening; sports and sports history; and health-related books. We are interested in titles that will appeal to the general population, without regard to ethnicity, belief, culture or the author’s inner life. We are not currently looking for poetry or devotional projects.

Children’s Book Submissions
Bright Sky Press is interested in projects that are unique, be it in subject matter, writing style or illustrative techniques. We are looking for books that will lend our list a distinctive flair. Primarily, we are interested in fiction and non-fiction picture books for children ages up to eight years and non-fiction books for children ages eight to twelve years.

Outlined below is the basic procedure for submitting manuscript and proposals. (Please note, we do not accept proposals on disk, over the Internet, or by fax.) Please send us copies of your material and keep the original for yourself.

A nonfiction proposal should include:

  1. Cover letter giving a brief description of the project and what is included in the package.

  2. Proposal, including outline, introduction, illustrations list, sample captions, and text/sample chapters (approximately 30 pages of text). If you are submitting a cookbook proposal, include a list of recipes plus at least ten sample recipes with headnotes in addition to the information described above.

  3. Sample illustrations or photographs (duplicates rather than originals)

  4. A description of the audience you hope to reach. Please note that we expect that you will already have researched the market to determine how many books on the same subject are currently available. We look for books that stand out. Explain how your book differs from those already on the market.

  5. Your ideas for publicity and promotion of the book, including how you intend to reach your target market, and any contacts you have that may be helpful.

  6. Author/illustrator/photographer biography, including publishing credits and credentials in the field.

  7. A SASE, large enough to hold your materials for return. If desired, include a SASE for acknowledgement of receipt of the manuscript. Proposals that do not include an envelope and postage will not be acknowledged or returned.

Do not submit original material (either art, photos or manuscript) and please keep a copy of your project. Please note that material unaccompanied by a SASE will not be returned. Please direct your proposal to our editorial department at the address below.
